PRESSURE CONTROL MADE SIMPLE
Burst Plugs
A burst plug (or rupture disk) in extrusion serves as a critical safety device designed to relieve excessive pressure in an extruder barrel. It acts as a fail-safe mechanism to protect equipment and personnel from dangerous overpressure situations.

Purposes of a Burst Plug in Extrusion
-
Pressure Relief: If the pressure inside the extruder barrel exceeds a safe limit, the burst plug ruptures, releasing material and preventing damage to the extruder.
-
Equipment Protection: Prevents damage to screws, barrels, and dies by avoiding excessive pressure buildup.
-
Operator Safety: Reduces the risk of explosions or hazardous material leaks.
-
Cost Savings: Helps avoid expensive repairs and downtime caused by equipment failure due to overpressure.
How Burst Plugs Work as a Backup for Melt Pressure Transducers and Transmitters
-
Primary Monitoring: Melt pressure transducers and transmitters continuously measure and report pressure levels inside the extruder.
-
Backup Mechanism: If the transducers fail, misread, or do not detect a dangerous pressure increase in time, the burst plug provides an automatic and immediate response by rupturing at a pre-set pressure threshold.
-
No Electrical Dependency: Unlike pressure transducers, which require power and signal processing, burst plugs function mechanically, making them reliable in case of electrical or sensor failure.
-
Prevents Catastrophic Failure: In the event of a sensor malfunction, the burst plug ensures that excessive pressure is safely relieved rather than causing a major breakdown.
Typical Placement in an Extrusion System
-
Installed near the die or in the barrel, often close to where the melt pressure transducer is positioned.
-
Set to rupture at a slightly higher pressure than the normal operating range but below the maximum pressure limit of the system.
